Whether you envision something colorful and garden-inspired like Ellie and Joe’s celebration, a romantic neutral wedding, or a modern and minimal design, the space acts as the perfect blank canvas. Getting Ready at Walker Homestead
One of the many benefits of hosting a wedding at Walker Homestead in Iowa City is having a beautiful space right on the property to get ready before the celebration begins. Ellie spent the morning surrounded by her bridesmaids and family in Walker Homestead’s bright bridal suite, which provided a relaxed and picture-perfect setting for those first moments of the wedding day.
The Walker Homestead bridal suite is filled with natural light, white shiplap walls, large windows, and neutral finishes, making it an especially beautiful backdrop for getting-ready photos. Because the space is so light and neutral, everything from the wedding dress and accessories to the bridesmaids’ dresses photographs beautifully. Ellie’s gown looked especially stunning hanging against the crisp white walls before she stepped into it for the first time.
Once hair and makeup were complete, Ellie’s bridesmaids and family helped her into her wedding dress and put on the finishing touches. Her fitted gown featured an off-the-shoulder neckline, delicate lace and beaded detailing, sheer corset-inspired panels, and a gorgeous train. The natural light pouring through the windows highlighted every detail of the dress and made for some of the prettiest bridal portraits from the morning.
Having a dedicated getting-ready space at your Iowa City wedding venue also makes the logistics of the morning so much easier. Instead of traveling between multiple locations, the wedding party can settle in, get ready, and enjoy the morning together while vendors begin preparing the rest of the venue for the celebration ahead.
Colorful Summer Wedding Decor at Walker Homestead
Ellie and Joe’s Walker Homestead wedding decor was the perfect example of how color can completely transform a neutral reception space. Their design embraced soft blues, blush pinks, peach, lavender, buttery yellow, and fresh greenery, creating a romantic garden-inspired look that felt bright, playful, and perfect for a summer wedding in Iowa.
For the round guest tables, Ellie and Joe chose beautiful blue-and-white floral patterned linens, which immediately added color and personality to the room. Soft blush runners were layered across the tables for an additional touch of warmth, while colorful floral centerpieces brought together shades of peach, pink, yellow, and lavender. The combination felt elevated without being overly formal and looked especially beautiful against Walker Homestead’s white walls, wood accents, and black chairs.
The place settings were kept classic and elegant with layered white dinnerware, silver flatware, white napkins, textured glass candle holders, and coupe-style glassware. Small floral details were also incorporated into the stationery, tying the menus, place cards, and table numbers back into the overall garden-inspired wedding design. We love when even the smallest details feel intentional, and Ellie and Joe’s tablescapes are such a great example of how those little touches can bring an entire design together.
For the long wooden tables, we kept more of Walker Homestead’s natural wood exposed and incorporated greenery down the center with bud vases filled with colorful blooms. Mixing the long farmhouse-style tables with the patterned round tables added dimension to the reception layout while still keeping everything cohesive.
A Classic Blue & Black Bridal Party at Walker Homestead
The bridal party brought the perfect mix of classic elegance and soft summer color to this Walker Homestead wedding. The bridesmaids wore light blue satin dresses in a variety of silhouettes, allowing each bridesmaid to choose a style that felt like her while still creating a beautifully cohesive look. The soft blue was such a gorgeous choice for a summer wedding and stood out beautifully against the lush greenery and rolling Iowa countryside surrounding Walker Homestead.
For the groomsmen, classic black tuxedos with crisp white shirts and black bow ties created a timeless contrast against the bridesmaids’ light blue dresses. We especially loved how the colorful boutonnieres tied the groomsmen back into the overall wedding design, incorporating the same soft pinks, peaches, yellows, and blues seen throughout the florals.
The bridal party bouquets added even more color to the look, with garden-inspired arrangements filled with pastel blooms and greenery. Against the light blue bridesmaid dresses, the flowers absolutely popped! Together, the blue dresses, black tuxedos, and colorful summer florals created a wedding-party palette that felt elegant without being overly formal—perfect for a summer wedding at Walker Homestead in Iowa City.
And of course, the beautiful grounds at Walker Homestead made the perfect backdrop for bridal party portraits. The open fields, mature trees, and rolling green landscape gave the couple plenty of room for both classic portraits and those fun, candid bridal party photos that capture the personality of the day.
A Traditional Catholic Wedding Ceremony at St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church
Before heading to Walker Homestead for their reception, the couple officially became husband and wife during a beautiful Catholic wedding ceremony at St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church in Iowa City, Iowa. The historic church provided an incredible setting for such an important part of their wedding day, with its soaring ceilings, intricate altar, stained glass, and traditional architectural details creating a naturally breathtaking backdrop.
The couple kept the ceremony décor elegant and intentional, allowing the beauty of the church itself to take center stage. Colorful floral arrangements lined the aisle and framed the altar, bringing in the soft pink, peach, blue, yellow, and green tones used throughout the rest of their wedding design. The arrangements added just enough color while still complementing the warm woodwork and ornate details inside St. Mary’s.
Surrounded by their family, friends, and bridal party, the couple exchanged vows during a traditional Catholic ceremony. One of our favorite things about a Catholic wedding ceremony in Iowa City is how meaningful and timeless the setting feels. There is something incredibly special about watching a couple make their commitment to one another in a space filled with so much history and tradition.
After the ceremony, the newlyweds made their way back down the aisle hand-in-hand with huge smiles as their guests celebrated around them. From the bride's walk down the long church aisle to their first walk together as husband and wife, their ceremony at St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church was a beautiful beginning to the celebration before everyone continued on to their Walker Homestead wedding reception in Iowa City.
Cocktail Hour at Walker Homestead
After their ceremony in Iowa City, guests made their way to Walker Homestead to continue the celebration with a relaxed summer cocktail hour. One of the reasons we love a Walker Homestead wedding is the venue’s ability to create a seamless transition between each part of the day. Guests could grab a drink, mingle, enjoy the beautiful Iowa countryside, and explore some of the personalized details the couple incorporated into their reception.
The covered outdoor space was filled with thoughtful touches, including a vintage black dresser styled with colorful florals and greenery. Nearby, guests found their seating assignments displayed against a greenery wall alongside a gorgeous vintage mirror. A lush floral installation filled with peach, yellow, lavender, blue, and soft pink blooms tied the display into the couple’s colorful summer wedding design.
They also gave guests something fun to do while waiting for the reception to begin with a Pixel Pop Photo Booth! The greenery backdrop was personalized with “The Phillips,” while plenty of props encouraged everyone to have a little fun in front of the camera. It was such an easy way to keep guests entertained during cocktail hour while also giving them photos to take home from the celebration.
Between the photo booth, beautiful floral details, seating display, drinks, and plenty of space to mingle, their cocktail hour at Walker Homestead in Iowa City, Iowa felt like an extension of the entire wedding design rather than simply the time between the ceremony and reception. Every detail helped welcome guests to the venue and set the tone for the colorful, joyful Walker Homestead wedding reception that was about to begin.
A Seating Chart with a Personal Touch
One of our favorite details from this Walker Homestead wedding was the couple’s incredibly thoughtful seating chart. Rather than simply displaying guests’ names and table numbers, the bride and groom turned their seating assignments into something their guests could keep long after the wedding day was over. Every single guest received their own handwritten letter from the bride and groom.
Each envelope was individually labeled and displayed against a greenery wall, complete with the sweetest little blue bow detail. Guests found their name, opened their personal letter, and inside discovered both a heartfelt message from the couple and the table where they would be seated for the reception. It transformed something as simple as finding a table assignment into such a meaningful experience.
We absolutely love when couples find ways to make their wedding feel personal to the people who helped them get to this moment. Writing an individual note to every guest takes time, but it also gives you an opportunity to tell each person just how much their presence means to you. For guests, it becomes a little keepsake from the wedding rather than another escort card that gets left behind at the end of the night.
The entire display was finished with a vintage framed mirror reading, “At every table, we’ll save you a seat…” and a gorgeous statement floral arrangement filled with colorful summer blooms. Between the greenery wall, soft blue details, handwritten envelopes, vintage mirror, and lush florals, this unique wedding seating chart at Walker Homestead in Iowa City was not only beautiful—it was one of the most personal details of the entire wedding day.

The couple chose a live wedding band for their Walker Homestead reception, bringing an entirely different energy to the dance floor. Once the band started playing, the dance floor filled up and stayed that way throughout the night.
