The Iowa Memorial Union Wedding, Claire and Chad

Claire and Chad’s Iowa Memorial Union wedding in Iowa City, Iowa was the perfect blend of timeless elegance, romantic details, and an incredible celebration. Located in the heart of the University of Iowa campus, the Iowa Memorial Union created a beautiful backdrop for their wedding day, from their outdoor ceremony overlooking the Iowa River to their elegant reception inside the historic venue.

Their wedding design embraced a classic black-and-white color palette accented with abundant white florals, baby’s breath, and touches of gold. Claire’s romantic lace wedding gown and flowing veil paired beautifully with Chad’s classic black tuxedo, creating an effortlessly timeless look that felt right at home against the architecture of this iconic Iowa City wedding venue.

Their outdoor ceremony was especially stunning, with rows of white baby’s breath lining the aisle and lush white floral arrangements framing the ceremony space. After saying “I do,” guests headed inside the Iowa Memorial Union for a reception filled with elegant details, heartfelt moments, and plenty of celebration.

And Claire and Chad’s reception was anything but boring! A live wedding band kept the dance floor packed, guests celebrated with glow sticks, and even the Iowa Hawkeyes mascot made an appearance on the dance floor. It was the perfect way to bring a little University of Iowa spirit into their wedding day.

As an Iowa City wedding planner, we love seeing couples create celebrations that feel both elevated and completely personal. Claire and Chad’s Iowa Memorial Union wedding did exactly that—combining classic wedding details with a lively reception their guests won’t soon forget.

As an Iowa City wedding planner, we always love the opportunity to work at the Iowa Memorial Union. Located in the heart of the University of Iowa campus, the IMU offers couples a wedding venue that combines historic character, beautiful indoor spaces, and scenic outdoor ceremony options—all within one convenient location.

One of our favorite things about an Iowa Memorial Union wedding is the versatility of the venue. Couples can exchange vows outdoors with views of the Iowa River and surrounding greenery before moving inside for cocktail hour and their reception. The classic architecture of the building also creates a beautiful backdrop for wedding portraits and gives couples plenty of variety throughout their gallery without having to travel far on their wedding day.

We also love how easily the Iowa Memorial Union can be transformed to fit each couple's wedding vision. Whether you're planning something timeless and elegant like Claire and Chad's black-and-white celebration or bringing in a completely different color palette and design, the spaces provide a beautiful foundation to make your own.

And, of course, for couples with a connection to the University of Iowa, getting married at the IMU adds an extra layer of meaning to the celebration. From incorporating Hawkeye traditions to taking photos around campus, there are so many ways to personalize an Iowa City wedding at the Iowa Memorial Union.

For couples searching for an Iowa City wedding venue with a central location, indoor and outdoor options, and plenty of opportunities to make the day their own, the Iowa Memorial Union is one of our favorite venues to work at as an Iowa wedding planning and design team.

Getting Ready for Their Iowa City Wedding

Claire and Chad began their wedding day getting ready at a nearby Iowa City hotel, surrounded by their closest friends and family before heading over to the Iowa Memorial Union. Keeping their getting-ready location close to the venue made for an easy transition into the rest of the day while still giving each of them time to relax, get dressed, and enjoy those final moments before the celebration officially began.

Claire looked absolutely stunning in her romantic lace wedding gown with delicate off-the-shoulder sleeves, paired with soft waves and an all-white bridal bouquet. Meanwhile, Chad and his groomsmen kept things timeless in classic black tuxedos, sharing a celebratory toast before leaving for the venue.

Once everyone was ready, they made their way to the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City for wedding party and couple portraits before the ceremony. With the IMU's historic architecture, modern glass details, and surrounding University of Iowa campus, there were plenty of beautiful backdrops for photos while keeping everything conveniently in one location.

For couples planning an Iowa Memorial Union wedding, choosing a nearby Iowa City hotel for getting ready can be a great way to keep the wedding-day timeline simple and allow plenty of time for photos at the IMU before guests begin arriving.

A Timeless Black-Tie Wedding Party

Claire and Chad’s wedding party perfectly complemented the timeless, elegant style of their Iowa Memorial Union wedding. The bridesmaids wore all-black dresses in a mix of styles and silhouettes, allowing each person to have an individual look while keeping the overall wedding party cohesive. Their petite baby’s breath bouquets added a soft, romantic contrast to the black dresses and tied beautifully into the all-white floral design used throughout the day.

Chad and his groomsmen kept things equally classic in black tuxedos and bow ties. Together, the entire wedding party created a sophisticated black-and-white look that photographed beautifully against the modern architecture surrounding the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City.

One of our favorite details was the addition of the white parasols, which made their wedding party portraits feel playful while still fitting seamlessly into the elegant design. Claire and Chad weren’t afraid to have a little fun with their photos, and you can immediately see the energy and excitement their friends brought to the day.

For couples planning an Iowa City wedding, a black-and-white wedding party is such a timeless choice—and Claire and Chad’s celebration is the perfect example of how classic details can still feel modern, personal, and fun. Their University of Iowa wedding brought together an elegant aesthetic with plenty of personality, setting the tone for everything that followed at the Iowa Memorial Union.

An Outdoor Ceremony on the Iowa Memorial Union Patio

Claire and Chad exchanged vows during a beautiful outdoor wedding ceremony at the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City. The IMU patio created the perfect setting for their spring celebration, with lush green trees and views surrounding the space while still giving guests the convenience of celebrating the entire wedding at one venue.

The ceremony design was romantic and airy, featuring an abundance of baby’s breath and white roses. Clouds of baby’s breath lined both sides of the aisle, leading to two statement floral installations that framed Claire and Chad as they said “I do.” Gold chairs brought a subtle warmth to the otherwise all-white design, while white parasols were available for guests and added such a beautiful visual element to the outdoor ceremony.

We especially loved how the florals enhanced the patio without competing with the natural surroundings. The result was elegant, timeless, and perfectly suited for an Iowa Memorial Union wedding. Claire’s long veil and lace gown looked incredible against the greenery, while the bright spring sunshine made the entire ceremony feel even more romantic.

For couples searching for an outdoor wedding venue in Iowa City, the patio at the Iowa Memorial Union is such a unique option. You get the beauty of an outdoor Iowa City wedding ceremony along with the convenience of having your reception just steps away inside the IMU—making it easy for guests and creating a seamless transition into the rest of the celebration.

An Elegant Iowa Memorial Union Wedding Reception

After their outdoor ceremony, Claire and Chad moved inside the Iowa Memorial Union to celebrate with their family and friends. The reception continued the timeless black-and-white aesthetic of their Iowa City wedding, with classic white linens, gold chairs, and an abundance of baby’s breath and white roses throughout the space. The historic details of the IMU ballroom created a beautiful contrast with their clean, modern wedding design.

Claire and Chad incorporated their ceremony florals into the reception, creating statement floral installations behind their sweetheart table and bringing the romantic, airy feeling of their outdoor ceremony inside. Baby’s breath was also used along the front of the stage, tying the entire design together and making the live entertainment feel like part of the overall reception aesthetic.

Following dinner, toasts, cake, and their first dance, the celebration really began. Claire and Chad chose a live wedding band for their Iowa Memorial Union reception, and it completely transformed the energy of the room. With live vocals, saxophone, drums, guitar, and more, the band created the kind of atmosphere that makes guests want to get out of their seats and stay on the dance floor all night.

We love when couples incorporate live music into an Iowa City wedding reception, especially in a space like the Iowa Memorial Union where there is plenty of room for a stage and dance floor. Between the elegant reception design, historic IMU ballroom, and an incredible live band, Claire and Chad created a celebration that felt sophisticated during dinner and turned into an unforgettable party by the end of the night.

A Surprise Visit from Herky the Hawk

Claire and Chad’s Iowa Memorial Union wedding reception had one very special guest join the party—Herky the Hawk! The University of Iowa mascot made a surprise appearance on the dance floor, bringing plenty of Hawkeye spirit and giving guests another reason to celebrate. With glow sticks in hand and music playing, Herky jumped right into the party and quickly became one of the most memorable moments of the night.

Having Herky make an appearance was such a fun way to personalize their University of Iowa wedding and embrace the couple’s connection to Iowa City. Guests of all ages joined him on the dance floor, and of course, Claire and Chad had to grab a few photos with the iconic mascot.

For couples planning an Iowa City wedding at the Iowa Memorial Union, incorporating University of Iowa traditions like an appearance from Herky can be such a unique way to make the reception feel personal. Between the live band, packed dance floor, glow sticks, and a surprise visit from Herky, Claire and Chad’s IMU wedding reception was truly a Hawkeye celebration to remember.

From their romantic outdoor wedding ceremony at the Iowa Memorial Union to the classic black-and-white reception design, every part of their day felt intentional and completely true to them.
